And so we finally made it to the Ninth House. We are not returning, however, to an upward position. Instead, the Ninth House which is traditionally ruled over by Sagittarius, governs the thighs.
Thighs, anciently, were an important area. They symbolized, on some level, something that concerned oaths and beliefs. This fits this house which usually concerns trips, philosophies, and pursuits of pleasure. Older astrological interpretations refer to this as the House of the "higher mind". In other words, why do you believe what you believe and what do you have faith in on the basis of that belief?
A University Degree known as a PHD, for example, stands for Doctorate of Philosophy meaning that you have gone high enough in your educational course such that you should be able to have intelligent discourse about the philosophy of the study you took. We can see how this would be a "higher mind" in a more conventional modern sense.
In the ancient sense, though, our modern convention would seem not at all consistent. Philosophy had to account for much if not also the meaning of life. If you were asked about either, you better also be able to convince somebody else who believed differently than you that you knew your stuff. Sure, you might be arguing to argue, but philosophically speaking, both of you were elevating your minds. After all, we known that "smart people" would never argue just to be contrary, right?
Once you get all that "learnin" out of the way, you had better get on with the Tenth House.
